Nilla wafers12/1/2023 That's always been really funny to me-someone who really stridently believes that they're right when they're so wrong in, like, the worst way. “I have a hard time describing myself as a standup comedian because I don't feel like I'm doing stand up jokes more than I am acting like a person who has a bad point of view. “Yeah, I think that’s intentional,” she said. When I pointed out that a lot of her comedy could itself be described as “cringe,” she laughed. And now I’m gonna beg everyone to view me with kindness? I was like, if I get eviscerated for this then I’ll deserve it.” (Far from eviscerated, Harrison’s performance has been called both “ groundbreaking” and “ revelatory.”) I feel like I’ve done so much comedy that’s me being acidic and, like, venomous, and making fun of things I think suck ass. “It’s like the fear of cringe,” she said. Harrison knows that sincerity and naturalism have not necessarily been her calling cards thus far it felt strange, at times, to portray Anna. She’s been going ever since, getting named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch in 2019 and joining the writing staff of Netflix’s Big Mouth in 2020. (“I was shocked,” she deadpanned, “because I assumed he already did that.”). In 2017, she was tapped to do a segment on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about the transgender military ban. A pillar of the alternative comedy community, Harrison moved to New York in 2015 and quickly carved out a niche via her stand-up, podcasts like “A Woman’s Smile” with Lorelei Ramirez, and sold-out shows like “It’s A Guy Thing” with Mitra Jouhari and Catherine Cohen. But this is classic Patti Harrison-a comedian known for gonzo, “edge-lordy” (as she puts it) humor. Leave it to her to equate being vulnerable on camera to physical torture. That’s kind of what I feel like happens to me when I do self tapes.” It’s basically about this organization that kidnaps women and tortures them and puts them in so much pain so that they can experience euphoria and see into another realm of heaven. “It’s this hyper graphic French movie that’s banned in a bunch of countries because it’s so violent. “Have you seen that French movie Martyrs?” I had not. “I just, like, hate who I become when I have to make them,” she continued, still riffing on the idea of the self tape. That was surprising to hear, as the LA-based comedian has been popping up on screens right and left lately-stealing scenes on Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave, Hulu’s Shrill, and HBO Max’s Made For Love, and even making history as the first transgender actor to voice a character in a Disney film, March’s Raya and the Last Dragon. “I’m really horrible at self tapes,” she told me, admitting that she’s never booked an acting job by sending in an audition video before. Patti Harrison had just finished shoving bell peppers in her mouth when she hopped on the phone with Vanity Fair.
